Criminal Background Check (CBC)

Modified on Thu, 5 Jan, 2023 at 4:09 PM

Criminal Background Checks (CBC) are required by some states to issue your license in the event of a licensure application or an annual license renewal. Background checks are run through NMLS using the FBI database and requested through the Individual (MU4) Filing.

Granting Agency Access

Before submitting a background check, you will need to grant agency access to the correct department you are seeking licensure. This will ensure that the agency you are applying to will receive the CBC, so your application goes smoothly.

To grant CBC access to agencies, you will need to follow the steps below:

  1. Once you have logged into NMLS, go to CBC Agency Access under Filing.
  2. Go to Manage Agency Access and select the appropriate state agency you wish to grant background checks.

How to submit a Criminal Background Check in NMLS

To submit a background check in NMLS, you will need to go into your Individual (MU4) Filing. Under this filing, you will be able to access the CBC. In order to submit for a CBC, you will need to get a livescan fingerprint with a registered NMLS location through Fieldprint for NMLS fingerprint scheduling. See Individual (MU4) Filing for more information.

*Note: Some states will request for a NMLS background check (FBI Database) and/or a state background check. State background checks will usually give you a code to input at the time of your fingerprint scheduling.
